About Checkpoint Charlie
The most famous Cold War border crossing between East and West Berlin, where American and Soviet tanks faced each other in 1961, now a major tourist site with a replica guardhouse and the Mauermuseum.
Checkpoint Charlie was the main crossing point between East and West Berlin for Allied personnel, diplomats, and foreigners during the Cold War. Its name came from the NATO phonetic alphabet, Alpha and Bravo were checkpoints on the German inner-German border; Charlie was the Berlin crossing. The checkpoint gained worldwide fame in October 1961 when American M48 tanks and Soviet T-54 tanks faced each other across the white line for 16 tense hours, the closest the Cold War came to an armed superpower confrontation in Europe. Over the years, ingenious escape attempts took place here, hidden in car engines, in hollowed-out suitcases, in tunnels, and disguised in uniforms. The Mauermuseum directly opposite the replica guardhouse documents these stories in extraordinary detail. Today, the original white guardhouse is in a museum; a replica stands at the crossing surrounded by actors in period uniforms.
