About Pergamon Museum

Museum Island's crown jewel housing the monumental Pergamon Altar of 165 BC, the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, and the Market Gate of Miletus, currently under major renovation until 2037 with partial access.

The Pergamon Museum is one of the great archaeological museums of the world, built in the 1930s to house monumental architectural pieces excavated by German archaeologists in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its greatest treasure is the Pergamon Altar, a colossal Hellenistic altar from around 165 BC, reassembled stone by stone from the ruins of the ancient city of Pergamon in modern Turkey. The altar's famous frieze depicts the battle between the gods and the giants in extraordinary relief sculpture. The Ishtar Gate of Babylon, built under King Nebuchadnezzar II around 575 BC and shimmering with deep blue glazed bricks decorated with lions and dragons, is equally breathtaking. The Market Gate of Miletus, a 17-metre Roman facade from the 2nd century AD, stands reconstructed in a vast hall. Note: the Pergamon Altar hall is closed until 2037 for structural renovation, but the Ishtar Gate, Islamic Art collection, and other sections remain accessible.

Did you know? The Pergamon Altar's frieze is nearly 113 metres long, one of the longest continuous relief sculptures from the ancient world, depicting the mythological battle between gods and giants.
