About East Side Gallery

A 1.3-kilometre preserved section of the Berlin Wall along the Spree, painted by 105 international artists after the Wall fell in 1989, the world's largest open-air gallery.

The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall, 1.3 kilometres of the original inner wall along the Spree River in Friedrichshain. Between February and September 1990, just months after the Wall fell, 105 artists from 21 countries were invited to paint murals on the east-facing side of the Wall as a celebration of freedom and a document of the times. The most famous works include Dmitri Vrubel's 'Fraternal Kiss' depicting Brezhnev and Honecker kissing, and Birgit Kinder's 'Test the Rest' showing a Trabant car bursting through the Wall. The murals have suffered from weathering, graffiti, and vandalism over the decades, and were controversially restored in 2009, some artists repainted their own works, others were painted over by strangers. Despite ongoing preservation battles, the gallery remains one of Berlin's most vivid and visited sites, combining political history with public art.

Did you know? The murals were painted within months of the Wall falling in 1989-1990, turning a symbol of oppression into the world's largest open-air gallery almost overnight.
