About Neue Wache
Schinkel's 1818 neoclassical guardhouse, now Germany's central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny, housing Käthe Kollwitz's heartbreaking sculpture of a mother with her dead son.
The Neue Wache, New Guardhouse, is one of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's masterpieces: a spare, austere neoclassical building completed in 1818 on Unter den Linden, modelled on a Roman temple but given the simplicity and gravitas of Prussian neoclassicism. Originally built as the main guard post for the royal palace and arsenal, it has served multiple memorial functions through its history: under the Weimar Republic it became a memorial to the fallen of WWI; under the GDR it became the Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism, with an eternal flame and a soldier's honour guard changed ceremonially every hour; and after reunification, Chancellor Helmut Kohl redesigned it in 1993 as the Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny. At its centre stands an enlarged version of Käthe Kollwitz's sculpture 'Mother with Dead Son', a profoundly moving pietà-like figure that has become the most important memorial sculpture in Germany.
Did you know? The roof has a deliberate opening so that rain and snow fall directly on Kollwitz's sculpture, symbolising that the suffering of the memorial's subjects was real, exposed to the elements like those who lie in graveyards.
