About German Historical Museum
Germany's foremost history museum in the magnificent 1695 Baroque Arsenal on Unter den Linden, tracing 2,000 years of German history with a striking I.M. Pei glass spiral exhibition hall.
The German Historical Museum, Deutsches Historisches Museum, is Germany's national history museum, housed in the magnificent Arsenal (Zeughaus), the oldest surviving building on Unter den Linden, built between 1695 and 1730 as a repository for weapons, trophies, and military equipment. The Baroque building, designed by architects including Johann Arnold Nering and Andreas Schlüter, features extraordinary sculptural decorations including the celebrated 'dying warriors' keystones above the inner courtyard windows, carved by Schlüter. The permanent exhibition spans 2,000 years of German history from early medieval times to the present day, covering major events including the Holy Roman Empire, the Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, Prussian expansion, German unification, the World Wars, and the division and reunification. A striking contemporary exhibition pavilion, a glass spiral staircase tower designed by I.M. Pei, was added in 2003.
Did you know? The Arsenal's inner courtyard features 22 keystone masks of 'dying warriors' carved by Andreas Schlüter, among the finest Baroque sculptures in Berlin, each face expressing a different emotion of agony and resignation.
