About Kreuzberg
Berlin's most diverse and culturally vital neighbourhood, a former Wall-side enclave that became the punk and alternative capital of West Berlin, now a vibrant mix of Turkish community, street art, and nightlife.
Kreuzberg is Berlin's most culturally complex and historically significant neighbourhood for understanding the city's unconventional character. Sandwiched between three sections of the Berlin Wall during the Cold War, Kreuzberg became a refuge for young West Berliners who could avoid military conscription by living in Berlin (which had a special status outside the FRG conscription system). Cheap rents attracted artists, squatters, punks, and political radicals, creating one of the most vibrant alternative cultures in Europe. Simultaneously, beginning in the 1960s, the Turkish Gastarbeiter (guest worker) community established roots here, eventually creating the largest Turkish community outside Turkey. The neighbourhood is bisected by Kottbusser Tor and the famous SO36 area, home to legendary venues like the SO36 club. Today Kreuzberg is celebrated for its street art, diverse restaurants, Görlitzer Park, the Turkish Market on Maybachufer, and the vibrant Oranienstrasse.
Did you know? Because living in West Berlin exempted young men from military conscription in the Federal Republic, Kreuzberg attracted radical artists, punks, and squatters from across West Germany throughout the Cold War.
