About Prenzlauer Berg
East Berlin's most charming neighbourhood, a grid of late 19th-century tenements and tree-lined streets with the Kollwitzplatz market, Mauerpark flea market, and Kulturbrauerei brewing complex.
Prenzlauer Berg is a hilltop neighbourhood in northeast Berlin that was one of the most densely populated working-class districts in Wilhelmine Berlin and, during the GDR period, home to a vibrant underground art and music scene that operated in the gaps of official culture. Because it was in East Berlin and the buildings were not heavily bombed, the neighbourhood retains an extraordinary density of Wilhelmine era tenement buildings, the ornate five-storey late 19th-century apartment blocks typical of Berlin before WWI. After reunification and a period of rapid gentrification, Prenzlauer Berg became one of the most fashionable residential areas in Berlin, particularly among young families. Today it is known for its independent cafes, organic markets, the Sunday flea market at Mauerpark, the Kollwitzplatz weekly farmers' market, the Kulturbrauerei (a former brewery converted into a cultural complex), and a relaxed, creative, café-culture atmosphere.
Did you know? Prenzlauer Berg was a hub of the East German underground punk and alternative music scene in the 1980s, many bands operated in basement bars and inner courtyards largely outside official culture.
