About Vleeshuis: Sound of the City
A magnificent 1504 Gothic meat hall with striped brick and stone, now a museum of music and sound celebrating Antwerp's rich musical heritage from medieval instruments to carillon.
The Vleeshuis, 'Meat Hall', is one of the finest examples of late-Gothic secular architecture in Antwerp, built between 1501 and 1504 for the butchers' guild. The building's striking exterior of alternating brick and stone bands gives it a distinctive striped appearance, and the interior great hall with its wooden roof and stone pillars is one of the most impressive secular Gothic spaces in Belgium.
The Vleeshuis now houses 'Sound of the City,' a museum dedicated to Antwerp's musical heritage, tracing the city's remarkable contributions to the history of music from medieval times to the present. The collection includes historical musical instruments, keyboard instruments from the world-famous Antwerp harpsichord-making tradition, carillon bells and related instruments, and material relating to the city's major musical figures. The museum also functions as a concert venue for period instrument concerts and demonstrations.
Did you know? The Vleeshuis's distinctive striped brick-and-stone exterior was a deliberate design choice by the butchers' guild to make their headquarters visually unmistakable in the city.
