About Sint-Annatunnel: Pedestrian Tunnel Under the Scheldt
A remarkable 1933 Art Deco tunnel running 572 metres under the Scheldt, wooden escalators, tiled walls, and a walk that crosses under one of Europe's great rivers.
The Sint-Annatunnel is one of Antwerp's most unusual and beloved landmarks, a 572-metre pedestrian tunnel running under the Scheldt river, connecting the historic city centre on the right bank with the residential district of Sint-Anneke on the left bank. Built between 1931 and 1933 in Art Deco style and designed by Emiel van Averbeke, the tunnel is reached by its original wooden escalators, which are among the oldest surviving wooden escalators in Europe, housed in octagonal access buildings on each bank.
The tunnel is free to use and remains in daily use by cyclists, pedestrians, and sightseers. Walking through its tiled interior, 31 metres below the surface of the Scheldt, creates a distinctive and slightly otherworldly experience. The left bank exit emerges into Sint-Anneke, a neighbourhood with a relaxed promenade, river beach, and views back across the Scheldt to Antwerp's historic skyline, one of the finest panoramas the city offers.
Did you know? The Sint-Annatunnel's wooden escalators are among the oldest surviving wooden escalators in Europe, still running since their 1933 installation, transporting thousands of people daily.
