About Scheldt Riverfront & Het Steen
Antwerp's restored Scheldt waterfront, anchored by the ancient Het Steen fortress, offering sweeping river views and serving as the city's most dramatic public space.
The Scheldt Riverfront is Antwerp's most dramatic public space, a broad promenade along the western edge of the city where the Scheldt river, one of the great rivers of northwest Europe, offers views across to the flat polder landscape of Zeeland on the far bank. The riverfront underwent a major regeneration in the 2010s and 2020s, transforming an underused waterway edge into a popular promenade, events space, and cultural destination.
Anchoring the southern end of the riverfront is Het Steen, 'The Stone', Antwerp's oldest building, a medieval fortress whose foundations date back to the ninth century and whose current structure was largely rebuilt in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Het Steen was used successively as a fortress, a prison, and a maritime museum, and recently reopened after renovation as the starting point for the Antwerp Experience visitor attraction. The combination of ancient fortress, sweeping river views, and lively promenade makes this one of the essential Antwerp destinations.
Did you know? Het Steen, anchoring the Scheldt riverfront, is Antwerp's oldest building, its foundations date from the 9th century, making it over 1,100 years old.
