About Cogels-Osylei & Zurenborg

Antwerp's most extraordinary residential street, an eclectic Belle Époque boulevard where Art Nouveau, Neo-Gothic, and Renaissance Revival mansions create one of Belgium's most theatrical streetscapes.

Cogels-Osylei is Antwerp's most architecturally extravagant residential street, an extraordinary boulevard in the Zurenborg neighbourhood where wealthy Antwerp families competed in the late nineteenth century to build the most impressive house on the most fashionable street. The result is one of the most diverse and theatrically exuberant concentrations of Belle Époque domestic architecture in the world.

Every house is different: Art Nouveau villas with organic ironwork and ceramic tile details, Neo-Gothic mansions with pointed arches and crenellations, Flemish Renaissance Revival buildings with stepped gables and decorative pilasters, Baroque fantasies with sculpted facades. The street dates almost entirely from the 1890s and early 1900s, during Antwerp's final great commercial flowering, when the port made the city wealthy enough to support this kind of architectural extravagance. Today the street is a protected architectural heritage site and a remarkable open-air museum of late nineteenth-century bourgeois ambition.

Did you know? Every house on Cogels-Osylei is a different architectural style, Art Nouveau, Neo-Gothic, Flemish Renaissance, Baroque, creating one of the most eclectic streetscapes in the world.
