About Handelsbeurs: The World's First Stock Exchange

Built in 1531, Antwerp's Handelsbeurs was the world's first purpose-built stock exchange, the building that gave the word 'bourse' to most European languages.

The Handelsbeurs, or 'Commercial Exchange', was built in 1531 by Gilbert van Schoonbeke, making it the world's first purpose-built stock exchange. It was here that Antwerp's merchants gathered daily to trade not just goods but financial instruments, bills of exchange, insurance contracts, futures, creating the prototype of the modern financial markets. The building gave its name, 'beurs' in Dutch, 'bourse' in French, to stock exchanges across Europe and the world.

The original building was destroyed by fire three times and rebuilt, with the current Gothic Revival structure dating from 1872. The building's great hall, with its magnificent neo-Gothic arcade and glass roof, is one of the most impressive interior spaces in Antwerp. Today it operates as an events venue, concert hall, and restaurant, but the original function and the revolutionary financial innovations that took place here are acknowledged through exhibitions and commemorative elements throughout the building.

Did you know? Built in 1531, the Handelsbeurs gave the word 'bourse' (stock exchange) to French, and through it to most European and world languages, a linguistic legacy of Antwerp's commercial golden age.
