The Bloemenmarkt on the Singel canal is one of Amsterdam's most distinctive and beloved attractions, the world's only floating flower market, where fifteen stalls are permanently moored on barges along the southern bank of the Singel, between Koningsplein and Muntplein. The market has occupied this spot since 1862, when nurseries from outside the city found it convenient to moor their canal boats directly at the market location, selling flowers and plants directly from the boats. Today the stalls, though no longer floating freely, are built on stationary barges and sell the full range of Dutch horticultural products: fresh-cut flowers, potted plants, tulip and hyacinth bulbs ready for export, bulb-planting kits, and an enormous array of Dutch souvenirs. The market operates daily, seven days a week, and is particularly spectacular in spring when thousands of fresh tulips are on display.
