About Marina Grande and the Seafront

Amalfi's harbour and beach, the gateway to the town and once the base of a Mediterranean trading power, with ferries, fishing boats, and the seafront Piazza Flavio Gioia.

The waterfront is where most visitors first meet Amalfi, arriving by ferry or along the cliff-hanging coast road. Today the Marina Grande is a modest harbour of ferries, pleasure boats, and fishing craft beside a small beach, but in the Middle Ages this was one of the busiest ports in the western Mediterranean, the maritime base of the Republic of Amalfi. The seafront square, Piazza Flavio Gioia, is named for the figure traditionally credited with perfecting the mariner's compass, and a statue of him stands here. A great storm and sea-flood in 1343 swallowed much of the medieval lower town and its port structures, an event recorded by the poet Petrarch, who witnessed the storm from Naples.

Did you know? Amalfi was one of medieval Italy's four Maritime Republics, with Venice, Genoa, and Pisa; its sea-law code, the Tavole Amalfitane, was respected across the Mediterranean until 1570.
