About Arsenal of the Maritime Republic

The vaulted medieval shipyard where Amalfi built its galleys, one of the few surviving arsenals in southern Italy, now a museum of the maritime republic.

Just back from the waterfront stands the Arsenal of the Republic (Arsenale della Repubblica), the medieval shipyard where Amalfi built and repaired the galleys of its fleet. Two long aisles of stone piers support a series of pointed cross-vaults, a rare survival, as few medieval arsenals remain anywhere in southern Italy. Originally the building was larger and opened directly onto the sea, but the 1343 storm and later changes to the shoreline reduced it. Today the cool, cathedral-like space houses a museum dedicated to Amalfi's maritime past, including material on the Tavole Amalfitane and the town's seafaring traditions, and it hosts exhibitions and the historical regatta celebrations.

Did you know? The Arsenal is one of very few medieval shipyards surviving in southern Italy; its stone piers and pointed vaults once sheltered the galleys of Amalfi's fleet.
