Its name, "Valley of the Ironworks", comes from the medieval iron foundries that once used the stream's water power here, and whose ruins still stand among the trees. The reserve is famous among naturalists for its humid, sheltered microclimate, which preserves a relict flora more typical of a far older, warmer age, most remarkably the giant fern Woodwardia radicans, a rare survivor from before the last Ice Age. A walking trail climbs through dense woodland past waterfalls and pools, offering a cool, green counterpoint to the sun-baked coast below.
