About Cloister of Paradise
A serene 13th-century cloister of interlacing white Arab-Norman arches, built as a burial ground for Amalfi's medieval nobility.
Adjoining the cathedral, the Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso) was built between 1266 and 1268 at the wish of Archbishop Filippo Augustariccio as a cemetery for the noble families of Amalfi. Its most striking feature is the rhythm of slender twin columns supporting delicately interlaced pointed arches, a clear echo of Moorish and Arab-Norman architecture, more reminiscent of southern Spain or North Africa than of mainland Italy. Whitewashed and luminous, the cloister encloses a quiet garden and shelters fragments of medieval frescoes, ancient Roman sarcophagi reused as tombs, and carved stones from Amalfi's lost medieval churches.
Did you know? The cloister's delicately interlaced pointed arches reflect the Arab and Moorish architecture of the wider Mediterranean, a visible trace of the cultures Amalfi's merchants traded with.
