About Niederdorf

Zurich's lively old town quarter on the east bank of the Limmat, packed with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and the charming Hirschenplatz, the city's most animated street life.

Niederdorf, the "Lower Village", is the lively, bohemian eastern quarter of Zurich's old town, running along the right bank of the Limmat between the Zurich Hauptbahnhof to the north and the Grossmünster to the south. While the western old town (Altstadt) retains a more dignified, slightly quieter character, Niederdorf has always been the more colourful, less restrained counterpart, the neighbourhood where guild apprentices once caroused, where artists congregated, and where the city's nightlife has concentrated for centuries. The main artery, Niederdorfstrasse, is pedestrianised and lined with an eclectic mix of traditional Swiss restaurants, international eateries, bars, vintage clothing shops, and independent boutiques. The charming Hirschenplatz, "Stag Square", is a focal point, its terrace cafés packed with locals and tourists year-round. Side streets lead to hidden courtyards, independent galleries, and atmospheric old wine bars. In 1916 the neighbourhood attracted Dadaists including Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings at the Cabaret Voltaire nearby; today it maintains an artistic, multicultural, and energetic character that makes it the beating social heart of central Zurich.

Did you know? The Cabaret Voltaire on Spiegelgasse in Niederdorf is where the Dada movement was founded in 1916 by Hugo Ball and friends, one of the most influential art movements of the 20th century.
