About Lindenhof

A peaceful hilltop square above the old town built on Roman ruins, offering the finest panoramic view over the Limmat river and eastern Zurich.

Lindenhof is the most historic public square in Zurich, perched on a natural hill above the western bank of the Limmat River. Archaeological evidence reveals continuous occupation from as early as the Bronze Age. The Romans established a strategic customs post here in the 1st century AD, the remains of a Roman fortification wall are still visible, and a Carolingian imperial palace was later built on the same site. The hilltop was gradually cleared through the medieval period and by the 19th century had become the open, linden tree-shaded terrace that exists today. The square offers the most celebrated view in Zurich: looking east across the Limmat to the Grossmünster towers, the Rathaus, and the Niederdorf rooftops rising up to the Zürichberg hill. Local residents have used the Lindenhof for recreation for centuries, today, groups of retired gentlemen gather here to play giant open-air chess on the large stone board set into the square's pavement, a delightful Zurich tradition. The square is a car-free sanctuary in the centre of the old town, accessible only by foot through the surrounding medieval lanes.

Did you know? The Lindenhof hill has been continuously occupied since the Bronze Age and served as a Roman customs post, Carolingian imperial palace, and medieval tower before becoming a public park.
