About Zurich Zoo
One of Europe's finest zoos, featuring the spectacular Masoala Rainforest Hall and the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park, set in the forested hills above the city.
Zurich Zoo, founded in 1929 and perched on the Zürichberg hill above the city, is consistently ranked among the finest zoological institutions in Europe. The zoo is home to over 380 species and 4,000 animals, but it is most celebrated for two exceptional installations. The Masoala Rainforest Hall, opened in 2003, encloses a vast tropical ecosystem from Madagascar under a glass dome, free-flying birds, ring-tailed lemurs, chameleons, and hundreds of plant species create an immersive rainforest experience. The Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park, opened in 2014 and named after a Thai national park, provides a generously spacious indoor-outdoor habitat for Asian elephants, including naturalistic pools and a breeding programme. Other highlights include the Lewa Savannah (a large African savannah habitat), the Gorilla Trail (with western lowland gorillas), and innovative enclosures for snow leopards, Amur tigers, and Sumatran orangutans. The zoo has a strong conservation and breeding programme orientation, participating in international programmes for numerous endangered species.
