About Mirogoj Cemetery
Zagreb's monumental cemetery, a masterpiece by Hermann Bollé whose long ivy-clad arcades and green copper domes shelter the tombs of the great Croats, often called the Croatian Pantheon.
Mirogoj, on the slopes north of the centre, is Zagreb's monumental cemetery and one of the most beautiful in Europe. It was opened in 1876 on land once owned by the linguist Ljudevit Gaj, and designed as a single grand complex by the architect Hermann Bollé. From the street its long arcades look like a fortress wall topped with green copper domes; within, they open into airy vaulted walkways lined with family tombs.
Built by the city rather than a church, Mirogoj welcomed the dead of every faith, and its domes carry the symbols of several religions. The arcades took from 1879 to 1917 to complete. So many eminent Croats rest here, among them the first president and the greatest writers and scientists, that it is often called the Croatian Pantheon. It is open daily and free to enter.
