About Lotrščak Tower
A 13th-century defence tower in the Upper Town, famous for the Grič cannon fired from it every day at noon, with a rooftop viewpoint over the city and the little funicular climbing to its foot.
Lotrščak Tower (Kula Lotrščak) is a stout thirteenth-century tower in the Upper Town, built to guard the southern gate of the Gradec town wall after the fortifications were completed around 1266. Its name comes from a Latin phrase for the 'thieves' bell', rung in the evening to warn that the town gates were about to close. Two upper floors and a wooden turret were added in a restoration of 1857.
Every day at noon the Grič cannon is fired from a window on the tower, a custom begun in 1877 to give the city's church bell-ringers an exact time signal. The tower now belongs to the Klovićevi dvori gallery and has a viewing platform over the rooftops. Just beside it is the upper station of the Zagreb Funicular, one of the shortest public funiculars in the world.
