About St Mark's Church
The old parish church of the Upper Town, famous for its dazzling tiled roof bearing the coats of arms of Croatia and Zagreb, standing on the square that holds the seats of government and parliament.
The Church of St Mark stands in the middle of St Mark's Square in the Upper Town, Gradec, and is one of the oldest monuments in Zagreb, with Gothic origins in the fourteenth century and a Romanesque window that hints at a church here a century earlier. Its late-Gothic south portal, attributed to the Parler workshop of Prague, carries fifteen sculpted figures.
The church is world-famous for its roof, laid during a neo-Gothic restoration of the 1870s and 1880s led by Friedrich von Schmidt and Hermann Bollé. Its glazed tiles form two great coats of arms: the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, and the City of Zagreb. The square around it holds the Croatian government, the Sabor (parliament) and the Constitutional Court.
