About Yorkshire Museum

One of England's oldest museums, a small treasure house of York's 2,000 years, home to the golden Middleham Jewel and the Anglo-Saxon York Helmet that names its long-dead owner, Oshere.

The Yorkshire Museum, opened in 1830 in a Greek Revival building by William Wilkins, is one of the longest-established museums in England, founded by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society on former St Mary's Abbey land. Its designated collections span biology, geology, archaeology, astronomy and coins, and tell the story of York from Roman Eboracum through Anglian and Viking times to the Middle Ages. Among its treasures are the Middleham Jewel, a 15th-century gold devotional pendant set with a sapphire, found near Middleham in 1985; the 8th-century Coppergate (York) Helmet, an Anglian helmet naming its owner Oshere and the best-preserved of its kind, found at Coppergate in 1982; the 8th-century Ormside Bowl of Anglo-Saxon silver; and Mesolithic art from Star Carr, among the oldest in Britain. It is run by York Museums Trust, within the historic city of York.

Did you know? The Middleham Jewel, a palm-sized gold pendant set with a great blue sapphire, lay lost in a field for 500 years until a metal-detectorist found it near Middleham Castle in 1985, a masterpiece of medieval English goldwork.
