Ten green acres by the river holding two thousand years of York: the soaring ruins of a great Benedictine abbey, a genuine Roman corner tower, and a lovely Victorian botanic garden around them.
The York Museum Gardens are botanic gardens of about 10 acres beside the River Ouse, created in the 1830s by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and now free to enter. They are set among far older monuments. The chief ruin is St Mary's Abbey, a Benedictine monastery refounded in 1088 that became the richest of its kind in northern England, dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539; its roofless church wall still stands on the lawns. In one corner rises the Multangular Tower, whose lower, Roman-tile-banded courses are the surviving western corner tower of the Roman fortress of Eboracum, with a medieval upper section. The gardens also hold the medieval Hospitium, the church of St Olave, and an 1830s observatory. Managed by York Museums Trust, they lie within the historic city of York.
