About Treasurer's House

The elegant house of the Minster's treasurers, kept exactly as its last owner left it, and famous for the 1953 tale of an apprentice who saw Roman soldiers march through its cellar.

Treasurer's House stands in Minster Yard behind York Minster and takes its name from the Minster's medieval treasurers, whose office was created in 1091 and abolished at the Reformation, the last treasurer surrendering the house in 1547. Little medieval fabric survives; the present house is largely of the early 17th century, when it was rebuilt with a symmetrical front, and it stands over a main Roman road, with a Roman column still in the cellar. The wealthy industrialist Frank Green restored it around 1900 and in 1930 gave it, complete with all its contents, to the National Trust, one of the first houses given in this way, on condition that nothing be moved. It is famous for a 1953 ghost story in which an apprentice claimed to see Roman soldiers march through the cellar. A Grade I listed building, it lies within the historic city of York.

Did you know? Frank Green gave the house to the National Trust in 1930 complete with all its furniture, one of the first such gifts, on the strict condition that nothing be moved; studs in the floor still mark where each piece must stand.
