About POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews

A museum on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto, facing the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, that tells a thousand years of Polish-Jewish life, in a striking modern building with an undulating entrance hall.

The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews stands in Muranów, the pre-war Jewish quarter and the site of the Warsaw Ghetto, directly facing the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes. Its building, by the Finnish architects Lahdelma and Mahlamäki, is a glass box whose entrance opens into a high, undulating hall of pale curved walls, a space many visitors read as the parting of the Red Sea. 'Polin' is the Hebrew name for Poland, and a medieval legend reads it as 'rest here'.

The museum opened in 2013, on the seventieth anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and its core exhibition opened in 2014, winning the European Museum of the Year Award. Across eight galleries it presents a thousand years of Jewish life in Poland, not only its end: among its centrepieces is the reconstructed painted ceiling of a seventeenth-century wooden synagogue. Before the war Warsaw held one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe, about a third of the city.
