About Copernicus Science Centre
A large hands-on science centre on the Vistula embankment, with hundreds of interactive exhibits, a planetarium under an amber dome, a roof garden and a swinging Foucault pendulum, named after the great Polish astronomer.
The Copernicus Science Centre, on the Vistula embankment, is the largest science centre in Poland and one of the most advanced in Europe. It opened in 2010, with its planetarium following in 2011, and is built around more than four hundred interactive exhibits that visitors work themselves, across galleries on movement, on people and the environment, on light, and on the roots of civilisation, with a gallery for the youngest children and another for teenagers.
The long, low building stands over a road tunnel beside the river, carried on girders so that it does not rest on the tunnel below. Its planetarium, 'Niebo Kopernika', sits in a boulder-shaped block clad in amber glass, with an immersive domed screen. A Foucault pendulum swings in the main hall, showing the turning of the Earth, and the roof garden is open in the warmer months. The centre is named after Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who placed the Sun at the centre.
