The Royal Route is the historic ceremonial road that runs south from Castle Square, down Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat, once linking the Royal Castle with the royal palace at Wilanów. Krakowskie Przedmieście, one of the oldest avenues in the city, is lined with aristocratic mansions, the Presidential Palace with its stone lions, the gate of the University of Warsaw, and churches: St. Anne's, and the Baroque Holy Cross Church, where an urn in a pillar holds the heart of Frédéric Chopin.
Along the way stand the monuments to Copernicus and to the poet Adam Mickiewicz. Nowy Świat, the 'New World' street, was almost completely destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt in an early-nineteenth-century neoclassical style, and is now lined with shops, restaurants and cafés. The whole route, with parts of the Old Town, is a designated national Historic Monument.
