About Royal Castle
The former residence of Poland's kings and seat of its parliament at the gate of the Old Town, blown up by German forces in the war and rebuilt from voluntary donations in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Royal Castle stands at Castle Square, at the entrance to the Old Town, where it was for centuries the residence of Polish monarchs and the seat of the Sejm, the parliament. It grew from a fourteenth-century stronghold of the Dukes of Masovia; after Sigismund III Vasa moved the court from Kraków, it was enlarged around 1600 and crowned with its tall clock tower. Here the Four-Year Parliament drafted the Constitution of 3 May 1791, the first codified national constitution in Europe.
In 1939 German shells set the castle ablaze; the interior was then stripped, the walls were mined, and after the 1944 Uprising the ruins were blown up, leaving only fragments standing. Rebuilding began only in 1971, funded largely by donations from Poles at home and abroad, and the castle opened as a museum in 1984. Inside, the Canaletto Room holds Bellotto's views of Warsaw, used to rebuild the city, and the Lanckoroński Collection includes two Rembrandts.
