About Scaliger Tombs (Arche Scaligere)
An extraordinary Gothic funerary complex of the della Scala dynasty rulers of Verona, featuring soaring marble canopied tombs with equestrian statues on top, some of the finest Gothic sculpture in Italy.
The Arche Scaligere are a group of Gothic funerary monuments to the della Scala family, the lords who ruled Verona from 1262 to 1387. Located beside the small Romanesque church of Santa Maria Antica, the tombs are enclosed by an ornate Gothic iron fence decorated with the family's ladder emblem (scala means ladder in Italian). The three main monuments, to Cangrande I, Mastino II, and Cansignorio della Scala, are elaborate marble constructions with pointed arches, Gothic tracery, and superb equestrian statues positioned dramatically on top of the canopied biers. The equestrian figure on Cansignorio's tomb is particularly remarkable. The originals of the equestrian statues are now in the Castelvecchio Museum, and the ones you see here are high-quality replicas. Cangrande's original statue there is one of the masterpieces of 14th-century Italian sculpture.
Did you know? The original equestrian statue of Cangrande I della Scala, now in Castelvecchio Museum, shows him with a startling expression of open-mouthed laughter, remarkably unusual for a medieval funerary monument.
