About Sant'Anastasia

Verona's largest Gothic church, home to Pisanello's extraordinary fresco of Saint George and the Princess, and the charming 'Gobbi' hunchback stoups at the entrance.

Sant'Anastasia is the largest church in Verona, a Dominican Gothic structure begun in 1290 and largely completed by the early sixteenth century, though the facade was never fully finished. The interior is immediately distinguished by two curious entrance hunchback figures, carved marble men permanently kneeling to hold the holy water stoups, nicknamed the Gobbi (the hunchbacks). The church contains some of the finest Gothic and early Renaissance art in the Veneto. The undisputed masterpiece is Pisanello's fresco of Saint George and the Princess of Trebizond (c.1436-38) in the Pellegrini Chapel, high on the right wall of the chancel, a shimmering, dreamlike painting of extraordinary refinement and mysterious poetry. There are also important works by Liberale da Verona, Michele da Verona, and fine Gothic tombs. The vast red-brick nave, soaring Gothic arches, and painted columns create one of the most impressive Gothic interiors in northern Italy.

Did you know? Pisanello's Saint George fresco (c.1436-38) is one of the last great works of the International Gothic style and contains the mysterious detail of hanged men dangling from gibbets in the background.
