About Giardino Giusti

One of Italy's finest Renaissance gardens, laid out in the late 16th century with cypress alleys, topiary, terraced hillside, Baroque grottos, and spectacular views over the rooftops of Verona.

The Giardino Giusti is one of the best-preserved and most celebrated Renaissance gardens in Italy, created by the Giusti family in the late sixteenth century on the east bank of the Adige. The garden is divided into a formal lower section of parterres, topiary, and cypress alleys, the famous cypresses, some over 400 years old, were praised by Goethe during his Italian journey in 1786, and a wilder, more romantic upper hillside section with Baroque grottos, a labyrinth, and a terrace offering spectacular panoramic views over Verona. A monumental gateway leads from the formal garden to the upper section through a dramatic rocky passage. Francis I of Austria, Cosimo de' Medici, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Goethe are among the distinguished visitors recorded in the garden's history. The adjacent palazzo has been in the Giusti family since the garden's creation.

Did you know? Goethe visited in 1786 and praised the ancient cypresses in his Italian Journey, some of the cypress trees he admired are still standing today, over 400 years old.
