About Verona Cathedral (Duomo)

A beautifully layered Romanesque cathedral dating from the 12th century, housing Titian's celebrated Assumption of the Virgin altarpiece, with a fine Romanesque portal and serene cloister.

Verona's Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare stands at the northern edge of the old city beside the Adige river, a distinguished Romanesque building begun in the twelfth century on the foundations of an even earlier Christian church. The west facade features a magnificent porch with carved figures attributed to the master sculptor Nicholaus, who also worked at Ferrara and Modena. The interior is a harmonious blend of Romanesque structure and later Gothic and Renaissance additions, with three apses and a fine cloister. The cathedral's most famous work is Titian's magnificent Assumption of the Virgin in the first chapel of the left nave, painted around 1535, a monumental canvas of swirling figures rising toward heaven. The adjacent baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte contains a remarkable twelfth-century octagonal font carved with New Testament scenes. A cloister and archaeological area allow exploration of the early Christian layers beneath.

Did you know? The carved portal sculptures are attributed to Nicholaus, the great 12th-century master who also carved the cathedral facades at Ferrara and Modena.
