About Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
One of Rome's four major basilicas, the world's most important Marian church, founded after a miraculous August snowfall in 358 AD, housing 5th-century golden mosaics and a relic of Christ's manger.
Santa Maria Maggiore, St Mary Major, is the greatest of Rome's many churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary and one of the four major papal basilicas. Its founding legend describes a wealthy Roman patrician and his wife who, childless, dreamed simultaneously with Pope Liberius that the Virgin appeared to them and asked that a church be built in her honour on the spot where snow fell in August. On August 5, 358 AD, snow fell on the summit of the Esquiline Hill, the Miracle of the Snow, and the church was founded on that spot.
The church preserves extraordinary 5th-century mosaics commissioned by Pope Sixtus III after the Council of Ephesus (431 AD) declared Mary 'Theotokos' (Mother of God), among the finest examples of Early Christian mosaic art in the world. The golden apse mosaic and the scenes from the Old Testament on the nave walls date from this period.
The basilica houses a precious relic: fragments of wood believed to be from the crib of Jesus (the 'Santa Culla', Holy Cradle), displayed in a crystal and silver urn in the Borghese Chapel. The remains of Baroque artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini are also buried in the basilica floor.
Did you know? Every August 5, the basilica celebrates the Miracle of the Snow by releasing thousands of white rose petals from the ceiling, a tradition dating back to the 14th century.
