About Piazza Venezia & Palazzo Venezia

Rome's central traffic hub and visual heart, dominated by the Vittoriano, with the Renaissance Palazzo Venezia from whose balcony Mussolini harangued the crowds.

Piazza Venezia is the geographical and symbolic heart of Rome, every major road from the city's historic centre either begins or ends here. The piazza is named after the Palazzo Venezia, a substantial Renaissance palace begun in 1455 as the Roman residence of the Venetian Cardinal Pietro Barbo (later Pope Paul II). It subsequently served as the Venetian Embassy to the Holy See, and then as Austria's Embassy to Italy.

From 1929 to 1943, Benito Mussolini made Palazzo Venezia his headquarters and office. He used the balcony of the Sala del Mappamondo (Hall of the Globe) to deliver speeches to the enormous crowds assembled in the piazza, keeping a single lamp burning in the window behind him at night to give the impression he was always working. His office desk was placed at the far end of a 25-metre room, making visitors walk the entire length alone before reaching him, an intentional exercise in intimidation.

The palazzo now contains a fine museum of decorative arts and medieval objects. The piazza itself is an extraordinary chaotic roundabout that most Romans navigate on foot if possible.

Did you know? Mussolini kept a light burning in his office window at all hours to suggest he was always working, Romans called it 'la luce di Mussolini' (the light of Mussolini).
