About Majestic Café

Porto's most beautiful café, opened in 1921 with a magnificent Belle Époque Art Nouveau interior, famously frequented by J.K. Rowling while she wrote early Harry Potter drafts in Porto.

The Majestic Café is one of the most celebrated café interiors in Europe and among the defining institutions of Porto's cultural life. Opened on Rua de Santa Catarina in 1921 under the name Elite Café, the establishment was renamed Majestic in 1922. The interior is a tour de force of Belle Époque design: gilded mirrors, carved wood panelling, carved plaster ceilings, marble-topped tables, and uniformed waiters create an atmosphere of Edwardian opulence that has been meticulously preserved. The café declined in the late 20th century and was closed for a period before a careful restoration returned it to its original magnificence. J.K. Rowling, who lived in Porto from 1991 to 1993, is reported to have written early Harry Potter material here, adding to the café's literary legend. It appears regularly on lists of the world's most beautiful cafés. The Majestic is located on Porto's principal shopping street and remains a working café serving pastries, lunch, and afternoon tea.

Did you know? J.K. Rowling, who lived in Porto from 1991 to 1993 while writing the early drafts of Harry Potter, reportedly frequented the Majestic Café, adding to the bookshop Livraria Lello's literary claim as a dual Porto connection to Hogwarts.
