About Serralves Foundation
Porto's foremost contemporary art destination, a spectacular white modernist museum by Álvaro Siza Vieira (1999) set within 18 hectares of gardens, alongside a remarkable Art Deco pink villa from the 1930s.
Serralves is Porto's most important cultural institution and one of the finest contemporary art museums in southern Europe, comprising three distinct elements: the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira and opened in 1999; the Casa de Serralves, a remarkable neoclassical Art Deco villa from the 1930s; and 18 hectares of gardens designed by Jacques Gréber and later developed by Caldeira Cabral. The museum building is a defining example of Siza's mature style, pristine white concrete volumes that respond with great sensitivity to light, landscape, and human movement. The museum presents rotating exhibitions of international and Portuguese contemporary art alongside a permanent collection. The gardens include formal parterres, a rose garden, a farm, woodland, and a lake, making Serralves as much a park as a museum. Admission covers both the museum and the park.
