Avenida dos Aliados is Porto's answer to the grand boulevards of Paris and Lisbon, a wide, formal avenue running through the commercial heart of the historic centre, lined with imposing early 20th-century buildings in eclectic, Art Nouveau, and early Modernist styles. The avenue was created between 1916 and 1925 as part of Porto's modernisation programme, following the demolition of the old Rua do Almada district. Its northern end is anchored by the Porto City Hall, Câmara Municipal do Porto, a 1920s building with a distinctive tower that has become one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. The central garden with its fountains, flowerbeds, and benches serves as Porto's informal social hub. Many of the great banks, insurance companies, and trading houses of early 20th-century Porto had their headquarters along this avenue; several fine Art Nouveau facades survive. The avenue hosts Porto's major public ceremonies, New Year's Eve celebrations, and summer festivals.
