About Dom Luís I Bridge

Porto's iconic double-deck iron arch bridge from 1886, designed by a pupil of Eiffel, connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro with one of the most spectacular urban views in Europe.

Dom Luís I Bridge is the most recognisable symbol of Porto, a magnificent double-deck iron arch bridge spanning the River Douro between Porto's Ribeira district and Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank. Constructed between 1881 and 1886 to designs by German-born engineer Théophile Seyrig, a former associate of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge has a total span of 172 metres and rises to 60 metres above the river at its highest point. The upper deck, which carries the Porto Metro's yellow line, offers a breathtaking pedestrian walkway with panoramic views over both cities, the Douro river, and the Atlantic horizon. The lower deck carries road traffic and pedestrians at a lower level. At the time of its completion, it was the longest metallic arch bridge in the world. The bridge replaced a 19th-century chain suspension bridge and has been the defining image of Porto ever since.

Did you know? At its completion in 1886, Dom Luís I Bridge was the longest metallic arch bridge in the world, with a 172-metre span and a height of 60 metres above the Douro.
