About Palácio da Bolsa
Porto's 19th-century Stock Exchange Palace, whose Arab Room, taking 18 years to complete, is considered the most opulent and extravagant interior in Portugal, inspired by the Alhambra of Granada.
The Palácio da Bolsa is Porto's former Stock Exchange, constructed between 1842 and 1910 by the Porto Commercial Association on the site of the demolished Franciscan convent adjacent to São Francisco Church. The building was intended to project the wealth and confidence of Porto's mercantile class during the height of the city's commercial prosperity. The exterior is a dignified Neoclassical design, but it is the interior that makes the Palácio da Bolsa extraordinary. The Glass Courtyard, covered by a spectacular iron-and-glass dome bearing the coats of arms of Portugal's trading nations, sets the tone. But the masterpiece is the Arab Room, designed by Gonçalves e Sousa between 1862 and 1880: a Moorish Revival salon of extraordinary opulence, its walls and ceiling covered in intricately carved and gilded stucco in the style of the Alhambra palace in Granada, considered the most beautiful room in Portugal. Guided tours only.
Did you know? The Arab Room took 18 years to complete (1862–1880) and is decorated with gilded stucco inspired by the Alhambra of Granada. The phrase 'Glory be to Allah' is inscribed in Arabic script around the upper walls.
