About Port Wine Lodges, Vila Nova de Gaia

The south bank of the Douro is covered in the great Port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, Taylor's, Graham's, Sandeman, Ferreira and dozens more, where Port wine matures in cool cellars before being shipped worldwide.

The hillside of Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro from Porto, has been the home of the Port wine trade since the 18th century. The great lodges, essentially large warehouses in which Port wine matures in wooden barrels, of Taylor's, Graham's, Sandeman, Ferreira, Ramos Pinto, Offley, and dozens of other houses line the south bank of the river. Port wine is made in the Douro Valley, some 100 kilometres upriver, but by law it must be aged in Gaia's riverside lodges before being sold. The cool, humid microclimate near the river, moderated by the Atlantic, is ideal for maturing wine. Most lodges offer guided cellar tours and tasting sessions, making Gaia one of the great wine tourism destinations in the world. The famous 'Don' figure of Sandeman, a silhouetted caped figure against a red background, is one of the most recognisable wine brand icons in the world, visible from across the river.

Did you know? For centuries, by law, all Port had to be aged in the riverside lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia before it could be sold, a requirement only lifted in 1986, after which producers could also age and ship from the Douro Valley itself, the cool, humid Atlantic-influenced microclimate along the Douro is considered ideal for the wine's maturation.
