About Basilica of Pompeii

The oldest surviving Roman basilica (2nd century BC), the law courts and commercial hall of ancient Pompeii, whose architectural form would become the template for the Christian church building across Europe.

The Basilica of Pompeii, located at the southwest corner of the Forum, is one of the oldest and best-preserved basilicas in the Roman world, built in the 2nd century BC. A basilica in the Roman sense was not a church, that came later, but a large covered public hall serving multiple functions: a law court, a commercial exchange, a place for business dealings sheltered from weather. The building is a large rectangular hall with a central nave and side aisles separated by two rows of brick columns, with a raised apse at one end containing the tribunal from which judges presided. Its architectural form, a long rectangular hall with columns dividing it into nave and aisles, and an apse at one end, was adopted by early Christians as the model for their own places of worship, which is why almost every Christian church ever built since the 4th century has the same fundamental layout as this building. The graffiti scratched onto the columns of the Basilica is among the most extensive and historically important in Pompeii.

Did you know? The Pompeii Basilica is the architectural ancestor of every Christian church ever built, its spatial organisation of nave, side aisles, and apse was adopted by early Christians in the 4th century and has not fundamentally changed in 1,700 years.
