About Thermopolium: Roman Fast Food Counter

A remarkably preserved Roman fast-food counter with food still in its terracotta jars, a skeleton was found behind the counter, and the dolia (food containers) still contain traces of the last meals ever served.

Pompeii had approximately 80 thermopolia, establishments serving hot and cold food and drink from counters with built-in terracotta containers called dolia, making fast food an integral part of Roman urban life. The thermopolium in Regio V, discovered during the Great Pompeii Project excavations in 2020, is the best preserved ever found. Its counter is intact, with the circular openings for the dolia still containing traces of food: duck bones, pig bones, fish, snails, fava beans. The colourful painted counter also shows images of what was on the menu, including a painted duck with its throat cut, advertising the dish available inside. Skeletal remains of a person were found behind the counter, apparently a worker who died during the eruption. The thermopolium is vivid evidence that Romans in a city like Pompeii did not primarily cook at home, most people, especially the poor and those in apartments without kitchens, ate from establishments like this.

Did you know? Pompeii had at least 80 documented thermopolia, roughly one for every 140 inhabitants, suggesting that eating out was the norm rather than the exception for most Roman urbanites.
