About Villa of the Mysteries

A suburban villa just outside the city gates with the most extraordinary fresco cycle in the ancient world, a sequence of large-scale paintings depicting an initiation into the Dionysian mysteries, still vivid after 2,000 years.

The Villa of the Mysteries is one of the most important Roman villas ever found, standing just outside the Herculaneum Gate at the north-western edge of Pompeii. Built in the 2nd century BC and expanded in the 1st century BC, it is most famous for the extraordinary fresco cycle in its main dining room, a continuous sequence of life-sized figures painted in the deep Pompeian red that covers all four walls of the room. The frescoes depict what appears to be an initiation ceremony into the Dionysian mystery cult, a series of rites involving music, dance, flagellation, and ritual preparation of a young woman, culminating in the presence of the god Dionysus himself. The iconographic programme has been debated for nearly two centuries without consensus; what is undeniable is its power. The figures are painted with an immediacy and psychological complexity unmatched in surviving Roman art. Standing in that room, surrounded by these life-sized figures conducting their mysterious ritual, the 2,000 years between you and them disappears.

Did you know? The Villa of the Mysteries fresco cycle is painted in "Pompeian red", a pigment that modern analysis has shown is made from cinnabar (mercury sulfide), which gives it the extraordinary saturation and durability that has kept it vivid for 2,000 years.
