About Forum Baths
The best-preserved Roman bath complex in Pompeii, with intact caldarium, tepidarium, and frigidarium, featuring original stucco ceiling decoration and a cold plunge pool that visitors can still see in near-perfect condition.
The Forum Baths are the most completely preserved bathhouse in Pompeii, built in the 80s BC shortly after the Roman colonisation of the city, and continuously in use until the eruption. Roman bathing was not a private act but a central social institution, baths were where business was conducted, friendships were made, news was exchanged, and the social fabric of the city was maintained. The Forum Baths had separate sections for men and women. The men's section is better preserved and shows the complete sequence of a Roman bath: the apodyterium (changing room), the frigidarium (cold room with a cold plunge pool), the tepidarium (warm room), and the caldarium (hot room). The tepidarium has its original stucco ceiling intact, decorated with ornamental grotesques. The caldarium has an apse containing a marble basin for cold water splashes and a labrum, a large shallow basin of cool water, at the far end. The underfloor hypocaust heating system, which circulated hot air beneath the floor and through the walls, is visible in several areas.
Did you know? The Forum Baths were built within a decade of Rome's colonisation of Pompeii in 80 BC, one of the first buildings the new Roman colonists constructed, indicating how central the bath was to Roman civic identity.
