About Musée Masséna

A dazzling Belle Époque villa on the Promenade, built by descendants of Napoleon's Marshal Masséna, now the museum of the history of Nice, with a free seaside garden of palms out front.

The Musée Masséna occupies the Villa Masséna, one of the last surviving Belle Époque villas on the Promenade des Anglais, built in 1898-1901 for Victor Masséna, a descendant of Napoleon's Marshal André Masséna, in a lavish Empire style. In 1919 the family gave it to the city on condition that its garden be opened to the public and the house become a museum of Nice's history; it opened in 1921. Today it is the museum of the art and history of Nice and the Riviera, covering roughly 1792 to 1939, the era when the city passed to France and became the winter capital of fashionable Europe; its holdings include Napoleonic relics, among them items linked to the Empress Joséphine and a death mask of Napoleon. Its seaside garden, laid out by Édouard André, fronts the Promenade. A historic monument, it lies on the seafront of Nice.

Did you know? The Masséna family gave their seafront villa to the city in 1919 on two conditions: that its garden be opened to the public forever, and that the house become a museum telling the story of Nice.
