About Promenade des Anglais

The palm-lined seafront of Nice, running miles along the Bay of Angels, birthplace of the Riviera holiday, funded by wintering English visitors in 1820, and the daily promenade of the whole city.

The Promenade des Anglais is the famous seafront walk of Nice, running about 7 km along the curve of the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels) from the airport toward the old town. It owes its name and origin to the English: from the 18th century wealthy English families wintered in Nice, and in 1820 the English community, led by the Reverend Lewis Way, funded a seaside path here, which the Niçois called the 'Camin dei Anglés', the English Way. It grew into a grand Belle Époque promenade lined with palace-hotels such as the Negresco (1912), and its blue chairs are an emblem of the city. On 14 July 2016 a terrorist drove a truck into the Bastille Day crowd here, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds; memorials mark the site. It runs along the historic city of Nice.
