About St. Peter's Church
Munich's oldest parish church, on the hill where the city began, climb its 306-step tower for the finest view in town, and meet the jewelled skeleton saint inside.
St. Peter's Church, affectionately known as the Alter Peter ("Old Peter"), is Munich's oldest parish church, first documented in 1225 and standing on the Petersbergl, the low hill traditionally regarded as the origin of the city. A great fire in 1327 destroyed much of medieval Munich and gutted the church, which was rebuilt and rededicated in 1368. Its 91-metre tower is the building's chief draw: a public viewing gallery at 56 metres, reached by 306 steps, was for centuries the post of a live-in watchman who scanned the city for fires and approaching danger. The tower holds eight bells, four of them cast between 1327 and 1720. Inside the church, the jewelled skeleton of Saint Munditia, a Roman catacomb martyr and patron of single women, is displayed in a glass shrine.
Did you know? Four of the tower's eight bells were cast between 1327 and 1720, so some of the sound falling on Marienplatz has been ringing out over the city for close to seven hundred years.
