About Viktualienmarkt

Munich's open-air larder since 1807, when a king pushed the food stalls off Marienplatz, a hundred-plus vendors, a rotating beer garden, and fountains honouring the city's favourite clowns.

The Viktualienmarkt is Munich's principal open-air food market, a short walk south of Marienplatz. It was established on its present site in 1807, when King Maximilian I ordered the city's produce trade moved off the overcrowded main square, and it has been held daily except Sundays ever since. Spread over some 18,500 square metres, it gathers more than a hundred stalls selling fruit, cheese, fish, game, flowers, spices and Bavarian specialities, with a permanent beer garden at its heart that rotates the beers of Munich's six major breweries. A blue-and-white maypole marks its centre, and several fountains honour beloved Munich comedians and folk performers, including Karl Valentin. The market's living tradition was added to the Bavarian State Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014. Its name derives from "victuals," an old word for provisions.

Did you know? The market's blue-and-white maypole is a Bavarian landmark, though the current pole only dates to 1962, the maypole tradition is old, but this particular one is younger than colour television.
